The speciality includes prevention, examination, treatment and monitoring of patients with blood-vessel illnesses or problems with blood circulation. It primarily includes treatment of stenosis, occlusions and bulging of blood vessels as a result of arteriosclerosis but also deals with the treatment of varicose veins and blood clots in the legs (deep venous thrombosis).
A physician specialized in vascular surgery examines blood-vessel illnesses/varicose veins. The examination may include ultrasound, a so-called "duplex scanning". This examination provides a basis for optimum treatment. If the physician decides that a by-pass operation is required, further x-ray examination of the blood vessel will be done by means of an arteriogram (x-ray examination of arteries with contrast) or MR scanning.
