Donor sperm
According to Danish law, in Denmark doctors are not allowed to treat patients with sperm from non-anonymous donors. Doctors are only allowed to use anonymous donors.
You can choose a donor from height, weight, eye and hair colour and race. We always have a stock of sperm from donors with the most common/Scandinavian characteristics. If you want a donor from our stock, we will do our best to match your wishes, giving eye colour priority number one. If you have special wishes, we would very much like to help you finding the right donor. You only have to contact us in good time before the start of the treatment. Further to that you can also yourself contact the sperm bank Cryos in Århus to find the right donor. It is important to contact the sperm bank in good time to ensure that we have the sperm straws when the treatment is to be carried out. Link to Sædbanken Cryos. You may also use other sperm banks as long as you can document that the donor is anonymous.
The health of the donors are tested regularly, for instance for AIDS and hepatitis. According to the guidelines of the National Board of Health, Denmark, we have, however, to note:
"AIDS is a very serious contagious disease that destroys the body defence system against infectious diseases and some cancer tumours. The disease is caused by a virus that can occur for instance in semen. As far as possible it has been ensured that the donors have not had a behaviour that implies a risk of being infected with HIV. In addition to this, donors are tested for the HIV infection before approval by means of a blood sample. The sperm may not be used before it has been frozen for at least six months, and a new blood sample has been taken from the donor testing for the HIV infection to rule out that the donor has generated antibodies against HIV in the period of time. Despite these precautionary measures, a minimal risk of transmitting HIV through an insemination cannot be ruled out."
In the selection of sperm donors, it has been sought to limit the risk of passing on hereditary diseases, malformations etc. by only using donors who have stated they know of no such hereditary risks in their families and where a doctor has made inquired into this. Despite these precautionary measures, a hereditary risk cannot be ruled out completely but for the group of donors this risk is assessed to be less than for the average of Danish men.
